Tips for feeding birds in winter

Some bird species migrate to warmer climates for the winter, but those that remain need support to endure the harsh winter conditions.

High-energy food helps birds withstand freezing temperatures, but the cold, lack of daylight, and snow make it difficult for them to find enough food. Providing food for our feathered friends is not only a valuable act of kindness but also an enjoyable hobby that brings joy to the winter months.

Below, we’ve compiled answers to some of the most common questions about feeding birds in winter.

When should you start and stop feeding birds?

Begin feeding birds when the soil freezes or the first snow arrives. Continue until spring, when the soil is bare and thawed. Once you've decided to start feeding, it's important to commit to doing so consistently throughout the winter, as birds become accustomed to visiting specific feeding spots.

Avoid feeding birds in summer, as they can find their food naturally, which is better suited to their needs. Additionally, diseases spread more easily at feeding stations in warm weather.

Where should you place a feeding station?

Place the feeding station slightly away from buildings, as birds startle easily and might accidentally fly into windows due to reflections. Trees and bushes offer shelter from cold winds and predators.

It’s a good idea to provide several feeding spots around your yard so that the birds don't have to compete with each other.

If you live in an apartment building, discuss with other residents before setting up a feeding station to ensure it doesn’t cause any inconvenience.

What should you feed birds?

The most popular bird foods are sunflower seeds, peanuts, oats, and tallow. In addition to these, you can try millet, hemp seeds, rapeseed, flaxseed, or berries.

It’s best to crush nuts into smaller pieces to make them easier for small birds to eat. Avoid feeding birds spoiled or overly salty food.

How should you organise the feeding?

Hanging bird feeders are a convenient way to feed birds, as ground feeding may attract unwanted visitors.
